One

of Bali, the full name of Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres born in
Brussels February 9, 1880, died in Ixelles May 31, 1958 at the age of 78
years, he was a painter from Belgium, arrived in Singaraja - Bali by
boat in 1932, then settled in Denpasar.
Le
Mayeur rented a house in Banjar Kelandis - Denpasar, where he became
acquainted with Legong dancer Ni Nyoman Pollok 15-year-old, who later
became the model of his paintings.
Le
Mayeur number of works that use Ni Pollok as a model exhibited in
Singapore for the first time in 1933, the then successful and he is
famous. Back from Singapore, Le Mayeur bought a piece of land at Sanur beach and build a house. At home who became the studio, Ni Pollok work every day as a model with 2 companions. Ni Pollok beauty and personality have captured the heart of Le Mayeur. Initially, he was only going to stay for 8 months, but then he decided to stay on the island until the end.
After 3 years of working together, in 1935, Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok married. Throughout her married life, Le Mayeur still paint using his wife as a model.
In 1956, Bp. Bahder Djohan, Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia was visited Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok in his home. Bahder
so fascinated with the work of the painter and then propose to couple
it to preserve their home and everything in it as a museum. Le
Mayeur agreed to the idea and since then he had to work harder to add
to a large collection of the house and add to the quality of his work as
well.
Finally,
Le Mayeur dream became a reality when, on August 28, 1957, a document
was signed, which is that Le Mayeur bequeathed all his property
including land, houses, and everything to Ni Pollok as a gift. At the same time, Ni Pollok then move all inherited from her husband to the Indonesian Government for use as a museum.
In
1958, Le Mayeur suffered from severe ear cancer, and accompanied by Ni
Pollok he returned to Belgium to receive medical care. After 2 months there, eventually Le Mayeur died at the age of 78 years and was buried in Ixelles / Elsene, Brussels. Ni Pollok then return home to take care of his house into a museum until his death on July 18, 1985 at the age of 68 years.
